Ever wonder about your heritage and where you come from? So does Violet Paz, the main character in Nancy Osa’s novel, Cuba 15. Violet is a 15-year-old girl of Cuban-Polish ancestry. Her grandparents emigrated from Cuba when her father was a child to escape the political struggles. Violet, however, does not know anything about her Cuban heritage because her father and grandparents refuse to discuss it. This story follows Violet as she prepares for her quinceañera. Along the way, the reader meets Violet’s quirky friends, watches as Violet joins the speech team competing in the Original Comedy category (written about her familia loca), and has her first kiss. Violet also discovers a lot about herself, her heritage, and her family. The characters in this book are lively and fun, and Osa does a great job of making them come alive. A classic coming-of-age story with a fun twist, Cuba 15 is a great read.
