Thirty-five
year old Sergio Gomez was killed December 3, 2007. This happened after being kidnapped a day earlier as he
made his way from the stadium in which he had just performed. Sources indicate
Gomez and two business associates were kidnapped at gunpoint by as many as 10
SUVs.
All
this comes after threats in the drug-controlled city of Morelia. The threats were directed at stopping K-Paz from performing in Morelia, the capital of Michoacan. These were not the first
threats the group had received. In 2006 K-Paz cancelled a concert after numerous threats. Neither Gomez nor the
band is known to have any connections to the drug trade.
Gomez
was born in Michoacan but moved to Chicago where his wife, children, and mother now live. Gomez was
lead singer of K-Paz de la Sierra, a Mexican-American group known for their
fast, upbeat Duranguense style music. The group has its roots in Chicago but performs across the nation and into Mexico.
Thousands
of fans showed up in one of Mexico City's
cathedrals to say one last goodbye to a beloved singer. According to police,
over 3,000 fans attended the services. Gomez's remains will be flown back
to Indiana.
Police
have found no evidence or leads in Gomez’s brutal murder.
