Drawing the ’64 Chevy Impala

1. I start with the outlines to create a structure for the drawing.

2. I add more to the framework of the drawing. The wheels were difficult. Every artist has difficulties with something. I have also started to draw the interior of the car.

  3. I complete the outlines and small details, except the wheels. I decide to work on them last. I do minimal shadings on the front hood, front window, and side of the vehicle to make the car look more realistic before moving on to the next step.

4. Now I add color to the artwork. I don’t use color in my drawings too often, so to me this was a risk. I’m striving for a realistic look. I test the colors I want to use on a piece of paper. I tried blue, but then changed my mind to brown. I start out coloring the Impala lightly to be on the safe side and get a mental view of how it will look when it’s completed. I decide to mix in different shades of brown to look more realistic.

5. After completing the side of the Impala, I’m happy with how the colors blend. You see the sun shining on my paper here because I was right by a window. Having the brightest light possible is usually the best way to see how your artwork is developing.

6. With the rest of the framework filled in, the lowrider is finally complete! Even the wheels came out well, and I love how the colors blend. Taking the risk to color was definitely worth it.
