Fiesta Queen Candace Montoya Honor student, athlete, community volunteer, beauty queen takes time to chat with LàTeen.
Chicos, we all strive to find that special chica out there: the one that will keep up with us on a 200-meter dash, who’s smart, has a loving family, and of course looks bellísima when she puts on an evening dress. Well, LàTeen recently found one in Colorado. An honor student, Candace Montoya finds time to volunteer for several community organizations as well as keep up with work and family. We caught up with Candace during her lunch break.
LT: You were crowned Miss 2007 Colorado State Fair Fiesta Queen. What was going through your mind as you stood on stage waiting to hear the results?
CM: While I was waiting for my name to be called during the pageant I felt confident and excited, yet nervous and anxious.
LT: You had to perform a special talent for the beauty pageant. What did you present?
CM: Oh my, I was so nervous. I performed a Mexican dance from the state of Jalisco called “Gavilan Gavilan Cillo” with my dance partner, James Olguin. It’s very similar to a baile folklórico. I have actually been dancing since I was 4 and I have done other performances, but for this one I was being judged so I got nervous.
LT: I heard that you would rather not work so you could go to school.
CM: Yes, I love school! But you have to work for your money. I just started attending CU-Denver in Colorado. I love the school; it has allowed me to live at home and remain with my family.
LT: Now that you can look back at your first couple years of high go to school, what was essential in surviving those years?
CM: For me, getting a good set of friends, especially through sports. Just finding friends who have the same interests as you is key. Sports are a huge part of my life, from track to basketball and anything in between.
LT: You come from a Latino family; you have an older brother and a protective father. Was it hard when you brought boys home to meet your family?
CM: Luckily, I’ve had a very respectful boyfriend so it was never an issue. I have known him forever! One thing though: Any boy must meet my dad before picking me up. And no honking the horn either!
