Freelance Writer Guidelines

LàTeen is America’s hot new magazine for Latino teens ages 12–17. Our goal is to offer content that excites, entertains, and empowers Hispanic teens across America. LàTeen editors assign articles to staff editors, contract writers, and freelancers. We also consider unsolicited submissions from teen readers and freelance writers. We recommend sending us a detailed description of your story idea first. Please be familiar with the content and tone of LàTeen before submitting your work.

Departments include:

Caliente (Hot) — Current culture including reviews of movies, books, video games, and music.
Cultura (Culture) — Variety including profiles of Hispanic sports stars, poetry, personal narratives, and Latin cultural traditions.
Amor (Love) — Relationships and dating.
Tu Futuro (Your Future) — Career profiles, college information, and tips on teen jobs.
Features — Variety of topics of interest to Hispanic teens. Recent feature topics include immigration, living in two cultures, lowrider cars, abusive relationships, and gangs.
Ciencia (Science) — Interesting current science and technology.
Buena Salud (Good Health) — May include health, recipes, and fitness.
Fashion & Beauty — Primarily done in house.

General guidelines for stories

Content must be engaging, appropriate, and relevant to readers ages 12-17.

E-mail submissions as Microsoft Word attachments in 12-point font. We will consider stories of any length up to 2000 words. Include author’s name, address, phone number, and e-mail address. Submissions may also be mailed.

Please include suggested headlines, subheadings, and sidebars, if appropriate. We also appreciate suggested art sources. We accept camera-ready artwork. Minimum resolution for digital photos and illustrations is 300 dpi; minimum size is 4 by 6 inches. Illustrations must be cmyk, in tiff format (IllustratorCS or PhotoshopCS files). Include credits.

Research should be based on primary sources. Include a list of websites, books, articles, interviews, and other resources used. Provide the name and contact information for people interviewed. We will fact-check.

We will acknowledge submissions and respond by e-mail to story queries within 90 days. If submitting material by regular mail, include a stamped, self-addressed envelope. Keep a copy of your work; it will not be returned.

Once a story is assigned (or an unsolicited submission is approved), we require you to sign an agreement granting LàTeen rights to publish the story in print and electronic forms. Fees vary. Payment will be made within 30 days of acceptance. Acceptance means the story has gone through our final edit, usually 30-60 days before publication.

Nearly all editorial content is in English. We occasionally print a story or poem in Spanish.
