And You Call Yourself Latino…

Being Latino describes a culture, a lifestyle, and a way of life.

¿Quién eres? Are you a player or a bench warmer? Are you a guy or a girl? Are you Latino? Those terms are pretty much self explanatory except Latino. If you call yourself a Latino or Latina do you know what you are endorsing? Sure, anyone can be categorized a Latino, my abuelita or my Chinese aunt, right?latino_1.png

Using the word Latino to describe your ethnicity has evolved within the United States and is evolving in other parts of the world. The term Latino can be used with the old school definition or with the new and hip meaning. As a matter of fact, you are changing the meaning of the word.

The more traditional meaning of Latino, the one used around the world, is simple. It encompasses all those who practice a culture or speak a language that can be related back to Latin. O sea, being Latino can be anyone who speaks one of the following languages Catalan, French, Italian, Occitan, Portuguese, Romanian, or Spanish. It can also be anyone who practices a culture where one of those languages is the official language.

It has had such an impact that it is now being included in most dictionaries. What definition might I be talking about? Bueno, the one that says that you are Latino if you have any ties to Latin America. So as long as your heritage is from south of the border, you are Latino.

As with any other name, you can accept or reject it. If you do accept being Latino know that you are endorsing the Latin American history, culture, and language. Even if you can’t speak Spanish you should at least know that it’s the primary language south of the border, followed by Portuguese and French.

So now that you know what being Latino means tell me, ¿Eres Latino?
