Love or Abuse?

Sometimes it's hard to tell if our relationships are healthy.

I met him my eighth grade year. Mi prima Erica was having her quinceañera, and I was one of the 15 girls in her court. One of her most important guests was her new chico, Jose. He was bringing his friend Mack, whom I wanted to meet. We sat on a bench outside of St. Cajetans talking. I know we talked for more than an hour, but the only thing I can remember him saying was that I looked beautiful in my dress, and I had a pretty sonrisa.

Prince charming to the rescue
It was January and Erica was complaining that she had to go back to school three days before I did from winter break. Since we had spent every single day of break with each other, we figured why not extend the break? So we came up with a plan to get her principal to let me shadow her at her high school. After some serious lying and begging, her principal agreed.

We were squeezing our way through this ridiculous crowd of extremely tall students during passing period to get to her locker when I lost Erica and began to panic a little. I bumped right into some guy’s chest leaving a lip gloss print on his white shirt. It was Mack. He saved me from the crowd. As Erica and I walked away, he reached for my hand and said, “See you later.” Of course I was blushing and completely obvious. Later that day, Erica dared me to leave my number in his locker. I did. Me llamó al día siguiente.
